yesterday, sitting on the train to heidelberg..it was really crowded and there were no vacancies except one seat across from a young blonde-blue eyed german guy who was very tall and engaged in a book. he was mad when i sat down because his legs were really long and the train was packed, now he didnt have the luxury of sticking his feet under my chair. anyway, the duration of the ride i watched this guy read his book, which was in german. he didnt speak english because i asked him and he ignored me. i read my book for a little while and found it hard to concentrate due to the sun and scenery and the lady breastfeeding her baby in the next set of seats. i was trying to figure out what the man was reading but i had no idea as he had not changed positions once and flashed the spine or cover my way. i figured it was a comedic novel seeing as he was smiling quite a bit, then i noticed he kept turning back a page in order to connect thoughts in the sentences he was reading, thus i inferred the literature at hand mightve been hard to follow or a bit confusing. i watched this guy for nearly an hour, he was about two feet opposite of me. it came time to exit the train and wander around heidelberg. upon my departure from the incredibly close quarters in which id been speculating he moved his hand and closed his book for a moment, i guess to give his eyes a break due to the fact hed been reading non stop the entire time id been sitting across from him. i looked at the book and was excited to see it was the same as mine! steppenwolf by hesse, something ive been meaning to read for months now and only just began last week, the day i left for germany. i had to tell him before i left the train so i tapped him on the leg and showed him my copy. he was just as delighted as me, for he made some nonsensical exclamitory sound (language barrier) and grabbed my copy to examine it. the doors opened and i was standing up, i had to get off the train, so i took my book away from the other steppenwolf and went to heidleberg. weird coincidence, considering the novel's subject matter.
